Claude Pro vs Max for Claude Code: what a month really costs
Claude Pro vs Max for Claude Code: prices, how the 5-hour and weekly limits work, and our measured month: $2,090 of usage at API prices on a $200 Max plan.

On this page
Claude Pro costs $20 a month, Max 5x $100 and Max 20x $200, and all three include Claude Code. They differ in how much you can use before a limit stops you: Max 5x gives five times Pro's usage per 5-hour session, Max 20x twenty times. Which one you need depends on how much you'd spend at API prices. Our heaviest developer's last 30 days of Claude Code would have cost $2,090 at API prices. They ran on a $200 Max 20x plan and never hit a limit.
Anthropic says its enterprise users average about $13 per active day of Claude Code, $150–250 a month. Our month was five times that. This guide covers what each plan includes, how the limits work, what a month really costs (with a script to measure your own), and how to make a plan last longer. Prices are as of 29 October 2026.
The plans side by side

| Pro | Max 5x | Max 20x | API key | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $20/month, or $17/month billed yearly | $100/month | $200/month | per token |
| Usage per 5-hour session | baseline | 5× Pro | 20× Pro | no plan limit, only rate limits |
| Weekly limit | yes | yes, plus a separate one for Fable | yes, plus a separate one for Fable | no |
| Claude Code | included | included | included | included |
| Fable 5.1 | only with usage credits | up to 50% of the weekly limit | up to 50% of the weekly limit | $10 / $50 per million tokens |
| Billing | monthly or yearly | monthly only | monthly only | pay as you go |
Sources: claude.com/pricing, Anthropic's Max plan article and Claude Code with Pro or Max.
Two details that the pricing page makes easy to misread:
- Max includes monthly API credits ($100 or $200), but not for Claude Code. They are for building on the Claude Platform. Anthropic's support article says they "can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps".
- An
ANTHROPIC_API_KEYin your environment switches Claude Code off your plan. If the variable is set, Claude Code uses that key and bills you at API rates, even if you are logged in with Max. Check your shell profile and.envfiles before you wonder where the API bill came from.
How the usage limits work
Every paid plan has two limits:
- A 5-hour session limit. Your usage resets five hours after the session starts. This is the limit the "5×" and "20×" multipliers describe.
- A weekly limit across all models. Max plans have a second weekly limit just for Fable.
Both limits are shared between Claude Code, the Claude apps and Claude chat: a long chat in the browser uses the same allowance as your terminal sessions. Anthropic doesn't publish the limits as token or message counts. You see them as usage bars: run /usage in Claude Code (or open Settings > Usage on claude.ai). On a subscription, /usage also shows what used the most (skills, subagents, MCP servers) and suggests changes.
When you hit the 5-hour limit in the middle of a task, Claude Code shows "Usage limit reached · wrapping up" and finishes the current step. After that you can wait for the reset, turn on usage credits (pay-as-you-go on top of the plan), or move up a tier.
What a month of Claude Code really costs
Claude Code keeps a transcript of every session in ~/.claude/projects, and every response in it records its token counts. We added up all of them on one developer's Mac for 29 September to 28 October 2026 and priced them at Anthropic's list prices. That developer builds CodexGuild with Claude Code most of the day, often with several sessions and subagents running at once, mostly on Opus 5.5.

| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Requests | 19,797 |
| Total at API prices | $2,090 |
| Active days | 25 of 30 |
| Median day | $77 |
| Busiest day | $208, more than the whole month of Max 20x |
| Days over $100 | 9 |
| Usage limits hit | 0 |
So for this developer, Max 20x cost about a tenth of what the same work would cost on an API key, and the limits never got in the way. Anthropic says the weekly limit is shared with Claude chat, and our count only covers Claude Code on this Mac. Their chat use comes on top, so the real usage is a little higher, not lower.
Where the tokens go
The surprise is what the cost is made of. Claude's answers and code (the output) are only 14% of it.

Every time Claude takes a turn or gets a tool result back, Claude Code sends the whole conversation again. Prompt caching makes that cheap per token: on Opus 5.5 a cached read costs $0.20 per million tokens instead of $4. But the median request in our month carried 298,000 tokens of context, and a quarter carried more than 500,000. That's about six cents a turn for context alone on Opus 5.5, before Claude writes anything. Multiply by twenty thousand requests and re-reading is 68% of the total.
This is also what fills your plan's limits. Claude Code's cost docs explain it the same way: "a one-line question in a session that has been open all day still draws usage for the whole conversation."
Which plan to pick
Our rule of thumb: measure what you'd spend at API prices (next section), then compare it with the plan price.
| Your month at API prices | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under about $20 | API key, or Pro if you also want Claude chat | You'd pay less per token than for a plan |
| $20 to $100 | Pro, until the 5-hour limit stops you more than once or twice a week; then Max 5x | Pro is the cheapest way in; the limit tells you when it isn't enough |
| $100 to $200 | Max 5x | Already cheaper than the API, with 5× Pro's usage per session |
| Over $200, or several sessions at once all day | Max 20x | Our $2,090 month fit, with no limit hit |
| Automation, CI, or a team that must never be stopped | API key (or Team/Enterprise) | No plan limits, spend is metered and capped per workspace |
Anthropic's own average ($13 per active day, $150–250 a month) falls between the Max 5x and Max 20x rows. Two caveats: Anthropic doesn't publish how much Pro allows, so "until the limit stops you" is the only reliable test; and the limit counts your Claude chat too.
Measure your own month
Claude Code deletes transcripts older than 30 days by default (cleanupPeriodDays), which conveniently means ~/.claude/projects holds about one month. This script prices it at today's API rates. It reads only the token counts, not your messages, and needs nothing but Python 3.9 or later:
"""What your last 30 days of Claude Code would cost at API prices.
Reads only the token counts in ~/.claude/projects (never message text). Python 3.9+, no dependencies.
Prices: USD per million tokens (input, cache write 5m, cache write 1h, cache read, output), Anthropic pricing page, 29 Oct 2026.

print(f"median day ${costs[len(costs) // 2]:,.2f}, busiest day ${costs[-1]:,.2f}")Save it as claude_month.py and run python3 claude_month.py. On the Mac we measured, it prints:
26 active days, $2,116 at API prices median day $76.65, busiest day $208.15
(One day more than the table above, because it includes the day we ran it.) Claude Code can log the same response on several lines, so the script keeps the last one for each response, which has the final token counts. If you use claude.ai chat a lot, remember that it shares the limits and isn't in these files.
Make your plan last longer
Since re-reading context is most of the usage, the habits that help are the ones that keep the context small:
/clearbetween unrelated tasks. It costs nothing and resets what every later turn re-reads./compactkeeps continuity, but it is itself a large request, because it reads the whole conversation to summarize it.- Use Sonnet 5.5 where Opus isn't needed. Its list prices are exactly half of Opus 5.5 ($2 / $10 and $0.10 cached). Our month on Sonnet 5.5 would have cost about $1,050 at API prices. For simple subagent tasks,
model: haikuis cheaper still. - Send noisy work to subagents. Test runs and log reading stay in the subagent's context, and only a summary returns to your main conversation.
- Keep what loads every turn small. A long CLAUDE.md, unused MCP servers and big tool results ride along with every request. Our guide to what belongs in CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md shows how to cut the file to what an agent actually uses, and hooks can filter test output before Claude sees it.
- Watch the idle extras. Scheduled tasks, goal check-ins and messages from other sessions start new turns that re-send the whole context, even while you're away.
Terse output styles help less than you'd think: in our month, output was 14% of the cost. Trimming the context saves more.
What this doesn't cover
- One developer, one month. Our numbers are a heavy user's real month, not an average. Your mix of models, session length and subagents will differ.
- The real size of the limits. Anthropic doesn't publish them. "No limit hit" says the month fit in Max 20x, not how close it came.
- Team and Enterprise seats work differently (Standard and Premium seats, organization spend limits). See Anthropic's cost docs for those.
- Fable 5.1 usage. Our month had almost none, so we can't say how fast it fills Max's separate Fable limit.
How we measured
We read every *.jsonl file under ~/.claude/projects on the developer's Mac, including subagent transcripts, and kept only assistant responses with a usage block, taking the last logged line for each message and request ID. For each one we multiplied input, 5-minute and 1-hour cache writes, cache reads and output tokens by the per-model list price from Anthropic's pricing page on 29 October 2026, including the 0.05× cache-read rate for Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5. The month is 29 September to 28 October 2026. We counted usage-limit events by searching the same transcripts for limit errors and found none. The only four API errors in the period were unrelated: an expired login, and three times "Your computer went to sleep mid-response". No message content was read or published.
Find out where your sessions go
The plan question is really a usage question. To see where your own Claude Code sessions lose time and tokens (repeated errors, retry loops, files read again and again), run the free tune-up in your project. It reads your transcripts locally and uploads nothing:
