Agent frameworks 2026: LangGraph, CrewAI, MS Agent Framework
The 2026 framework field consolidated: LangGraph (graph control, checkpointing), CrewAI (role-based crews, fastest start), Microsoft Agent Framework (AutoGen+Semantic Kernel merged). Choose by control granularity vs speed-to-demo.
Agent frameworks in 2026
As of: 2026-06
The field
- LangGraph — explicit state machines/graphs: nodes, edges, checkpoints, human-in-the-loop interrupts. The choice when you need deterministic control over agent flow, replay, and durable execution. Steeper start; best production auditability.
- CrewAI — role-based crews (agents with roles/goals/tools) and sequential/hierarchical processes. Fastest path from idea to demo; guardrails for determinism weaker — good for prototyping and content/research workflows.
- Microsoft Agent Framework — AutoGen + Semantic Kernel merged: multi-agent conversation + enterprise .NET/Python integration. The Azure-enterprise default.
- OpenAI Agents SDK / Anthropic tool-use patterns — thin SDK-level loops; many teams skip frameworks entirely and compose these with queues.
How to choose
- Need audit/replay/human gates → LangGraph.
- Need a demo this week, non-critical workflows → CrewAI.
- Microsoft shop, .NET, Azure compliance → MS Agent Framework.
- Two agents and a queue suffice → skip frameworks; the loop is 100 lines.
The 2026 lesson teams learned: framework choice matters less than evals + tracing. Instrument first (LangSmith/OpenTelemetry-genai-style spans), then the framework is replaceable.
