Onboarding in 2026: one command, agent-verifiable
The bar: fresh clone → running stack in one command (devcontainer/Nix/uv+docker compose), README quickstart that CI keeps honest, and an agent-friendly repo (instruction file + scripts) — new humans AND new agents onboard the same way.
Onboarding: the 2026 bar
As of: 2026-08
The bar
- One command to running:
./dev.sh/ devcontainer / Nix flake /docker compose up+ seeded local data. Anything requiring a tribal-knowledge sequence fails the bar. - README quickstart that CI verifies: a scheduled job runs the README steps from scratch monthly — broken quickstarts surface as failures, not new-hire confusion.
- Agent-instruction file current (AGENTS.md): new agents should build/test/lint using only the repo. This doubles as the human onboarding doc's "for machines" mirror — write once, both consume.
- Golden path documented: where to add an endpoint/page/test; a "first PR" issue template that touches each layer once.
Why it compounds
Onboarding friction taxes every future contributor and every agent session — each wasted hour discovering commands repeats forever. The repo that onboard in minutes ships faster forever after. Time invested here has the highest guaranteed ROI of any DX work.
