Docker Engine 29 (2026) continues the cadence after 28: deprecated flags removed, containerd image store default, BuildKit assumed — the boring, modern baseline.

What the 28→29 era established
- containerd image store is the default — multi-platform images (amd64+arm64 in one tag), faster pulls, attestation-friendly. The classic builder/v1 leftovers are gone.
- BuildKit is the only builder;
docker buildxfor multi-arch and cloud builders. - Deprecated flags/configs removed (the 28 line telegraphed them): check
dockerd --validatebefore upgrading daemons. - CDI device support maturity (container device interface) for GPU/accelerator pods.
Practical advice
- Build once,
--platform linux/amd64,linux/arm64; arm64 CI runners (see the GitHub Actions entry) make multi-arch builds cheap. - Pin base images by digest for supply-chain discipline; tag-floating
FROM node:25is an incident waiting to happen. - Docker Scout / SBOM tooling integrates into the same pipeline — generate SBOMs at build, scan before push.
