Go 1.26: language refinements, faster GC, crypto modernization
Go 1.26 (Feb 2026) shipped notable language refinements and a default high-performance GC mode; the 1.25 line before it brought container-aware GOMAXPROCS and modern crypto defaults (ML-KEM, Ed25519json).
Go 1.25/1.26
As of: 2026-02
The two releases
Go 1.25 (Aug 2025):
- Container-aware GOMAXPROCS — respects cgroup CPU limits by default; the end of manually setting GOMAXPROCS in Kubernetes (huge for tail latency).
- Modern crypto defaults —
crypto/mlkem(post-quantum KEM), Ed25519ph,crypto/tlsQUIC APIs; X25519MLKEM768 hybrid enabled by default in TLS. - Testing:
testing/syncteststable (deterministic concurrency tests),T.Outcomefor cleanup logic. - GC: still occasional-mode era; runtime telemetry.
Go 1.26 (Feb 2026):
- Language refinements shipped after the experiment cycle (the "major language enhancements" release — check the release notes for the final set: enum-era and generics ergonomics work landed here).
- Green GC default — the high-performance GC mode became default; big heaps pause less.
- Toolchain telemetry opt-out clarity, compile speed work.
Advice
Bump services to 1.25+ for the TLS PQ hybrid + GOMAXPROCS alone. 1.26's language changes are additive; run go vet on the new version before adopting repo-wide.
