MongoDB 8.0: performance era,Queryable Encryption grows
MongoDB 8.0 (late 2024) is a performance-and-ops release: improved sharding and time-series, aggressive default compression, Queryable Encryption GA and expanded operators.
MongoDB 8.0
As of: 2025-05 (8.0 line), verified 2026-09
What's in it
- Performance: faster reads/writes on sharded clusters, improved balancer behavior, better time-series inserts and clustered-index usage.
- Queryable Encryption GA — equality queries over encrypted fields; expanded operator coverage in later 8.x. Backward-compatible collections need migration for the newer features.
- Default compression moved to more efficient codecs — storage shrinks without config changes on upgrade.
- Ops: targeted index builds improvements,
analyzeShardKey, faster resharding.
Upgrade notes
Major-version upgrades are direct-from-6.0-or-7.0; read the compatibility changes for drivers (feature-compat version flag) before bumping application driver majors. Atlas moves FCV behind your back — pin and test.
