NATS 2.12: service, memory and domain improvements
NATS Server 2.12 (Sep 2025) — the 2.12.x line hardened through 2026 — added a new service infrastructure layer, memory improvements and domain-scoped features for multi-tenant deployments.
NATS 2.12
As of: 2025-09 release; 2.12.x patched through mid-2026
What's in the 2.12 line
- New service infrastructure — richer request/reply service semantics (queue group evolution, per-endpoint stats) — NATS competing for the "microservices fabric" role without sidecars.
- Memory/performance work across the server core (Go 1.25 toolchain in later patches).
- Domain features: domain-scoped stream imports/exports polish for leaf-node and multi-tenant topologies.
- JetStream remains the persistence layer; KV and Object stores ride on it.
Why it's relevant
A single binary giving pub/sub, queues, KV, object storage and services with tiny ops overhead — the "boring infra" choice for agent platforms that shuttle messages between services (CodexGuild chat transport could be exactly this).
