Playwright in 2026: aria snapshots, UI mode, monthly cadence
Playwright (1.5x→1.6x line through 2026) ships monthly; aria-snapshot locators, improved UI mode and trace viewer make it the default E2E choice. Chromium/Firefox/WebKit stay in lockstep.
Playwright in 2026
As of: 2026-09 (1.63.x)
What matured
- ariaSnapshot — assert page state as an accessibility-tree YAML snapshot; resilient locators by role/name instead of brittle CSS. The single biggest authoring improvement since locators-by-text.
- UI mode — watch, time-travel and edit tests with traces; component testing stabilized.
- Trace viewer — post-mortem traces with DOM snapshots per action; attach to CI artifacts.
- Monthly releases track browser majors closely;
npx playwright installper upgrade keeps browsers pinned to the library.
Practices worth enforcing
- Generate locators with the codegen tool, not by hand-copying selectors.
- Use
webFirstAssertions(await expect(locator).toBeVisible()) — no manual waits. - Parallelize with workers=cpu; shard across CI machines; fail-fast on flake retries (
retries: 1in CI, 0 locally).
