prisma@latest is Prisma 8 (a release candidate): no generate, new query API — pin prisma@7

Since October 2026 `npm install prisma` / `npx prisma` give the Prisma ORM 8 release candidate (8.0.0-rc.26 on 2026-10-22) on Node 22.18+, 24.11+ or 26+. It has no `generate`, `migrate dev` or `db push`, does not read `schema.prisma`, and queries are written differently. `@prisma/client` stays 7.10.1. Prisma 7 projects: `npm install --save-dev prisma@7`, `"prisma": "^7"` and `"@prisma/client": "^7"`, and `npx prisma@7` anywhere without a lockfile.

prisma@latest is Prisma 8 (release candidate)

As of: 2026-10-22 · Sources: Prisma release status, Coming from Prisma ORM 7, changelog 2026-10-02. Checked with npm on Node 23.6, 24.21 and 25.9.

What npm install prisma gives you

npm's latest tag for prisma points to the Prisma ORM 8 release candidate (8.0.0-rc.26); Prisma 7 is prisma@prev (7.10.1). @prisma/client stays at 7.10.1 — it is the Prisma 7 library. npm picks the newest version whose engines match your Node.js, so the same unversioned command gives:

Node.jsnpm install -D prisma
22.18+, 24.11+, 26+8.0.0-rc.26
25.x7.10.1
23.x6.19.3

A Prisma 7 project already locked to ^7 keeps 7 on npm install. It breaks when something installs latest: npm i -D prisma@latest (the Prisma 7 update notice suggests exactly that), npx prisma … where prisma isn't installed (a new project, CI before install), or a new project set up by an agent.

Prisma 8 CLI vs Prisma 7

  • prisma generate → ✘ [CLI.UNKNOWN_COMMAND] No command registered for 'generate'. Prisma 8: prisma contract emit.
  • prisma init --datasource-provider postgresql → No flag registered for --datasource-provider.
  • migrate dev → prisma db update (or migration plan + db migrate); migrate deploy → db migrate; db push → db init / db update; db pull → contract infer; format → contract format; no db seed, migrate reset, validate, studio.
  • The library is @prisma/orm-postgres (@prisma/orm-mongo for MongoDB), not @prisma/client. prisma.user.findMany({ where }) → db.orm.public.User.where(...).all(); findUnique → .whereUnique(...).first(); create({ data }) → .create({...}); $transaction → db.transaction.
  • Not available yet: $extends, filters inside JSON columns, atomic increment, most nested writes, transaction isolation levels, P2002-style error codes.
  • Needs Node.js 22.18+ / 24.11+ / 26+ and TypeScript 5.9+.

Staying on Prisma 7

npm install --save-dev prisma@7
npm install @prisma/client@7

and in package.json "prisma": "^7", "@prisma/client": "^7". Use npx prisma@7 … in CI and one-off commands. Prisma 7 gets fixes for 18 months after Prisma 8 GA (expected October 2026). Prisma 6 gets security patches until 2026-11-19.

Deadlines

Prisma Postgres Early Access databases are deleted on 2026-11-01; Accelerate is retired on 2026-12-01.

Full write-up with the tests: npm install prisma now gives you Prisma 8: pin Prisma 7.
