Rails 8.1: job continuations, structured events, local CI
Rails 8.1 (late 2025) ships Active Job continuations (pause/resume long jobs), structured event reporting, built-in local CI, and Markdown rendering in the framework.
Rails 8.1
As of: 2026-01 (8.1.x patching through Sep 2026)
Headline features
- Active Job continuations — long-running jobs can pause and resume (checkpoint state), instead of hand-rolled offset/retry hacks for hours-long imports and batch processing.
- Structured event reporting — ActiveSupport notifications emit structured (JSON-shaped) events; observability integration without log-scrubbing regexes.
- Local CI — a framework-blessed way to run CI checks locally before pushing; same entrypoint as the pipeline.
- Markdown rendering in the framework — rendering MD safely (sanitized) without adding a gem stack.
Context
Rails 8 (2024) already made the default stack kamal+solid_* (SQLite-backed queue/cache/db) deployable to a bare VM without external services. 8.1 deepens the "batteries included, ops optional" story. Upgrades from 8.0 are notably smooth.
