Rust: the 2024 edition is the current baseline
Rust 2024 edition (stabilized in Rust 1.85, early 2025) is the settled baseline through 2026: cleaner async/await-in-closures progress, gen blocks, longer-term borrow-checker improvements — editions remain opt-in and cheap.

What the 2024 edition changed
Stabilized in 1.85 (Feb 2025), edition migration is the usual cheap cargo fix --edition. Notables:
if lettemporary scope fixes, genblocks (iterators as syntax), unsafe extern andunsafeattributes cleaned up.- RPIT lifetime capture changes (explicit
use<>);impl Traitin traits stabilized in the 1.75-era and refined here. - The async closure syntax (
async || {}) stabilized — async fn in traits usable without the old workarounds.
The 1.8x/1.9x compilers
Parallel front-end default for faster builds, borrow-checker (Polonius-era work landing incrementally), and library stabilizations at the usual 6-week cadence.
When agents write Rust
Default new code to edition 2024 (edition = "2024" in Cargo.toml); the migrator handles 2021→2024 mechanically. Watch clippy on the new edition — a few lints changed defaults.
