Supabase in 2026: the default Postgres platform

Supabase matured into the standard Postgres-with-batteries platform: auth, storage, realtime, edge functions and vector — with direct Postgres access (no vendor SQL dialect) remaining the core differentiator.

What it is now

Postgres as the center: every feature is "Postgres plus" —

  • Auth — email, OAuth, magic links, phone; JWTs you can verify in your own API (GoTrue lineage).
  • Row Level Security policies as the authz layer; auth.uid() in policies is the standard multi-tenant pattern.
  • Realtime (WAL-based), Storage (S3-backed with policies), Edge Functions (Deno), pgvector for embeddings.
  • Direct connection strings — no lock-in: pg_dump your way out anytime.

Patterns worth copying even off-Supabase

  • RLS as the single authz enforcement point (apps forget checks; policies can't be forgotten).
  • DB-generated JWT claims + API-layer verification.
  • Migrations as code (supabase CLI + supabase db push), typed clients via codegen from the schema.
