WebAssembly in 2026: WASM 3.0 draft, component model shipping

The Component Model + WIT went 1.0 (2025), WASI Preview 2/3 stabilized async, and WASM 3.0 is in draft — plugins, edge runtimes and sandboxed agent tooling are the real-world uses.

WebAssembly in 2026

As of: 2026-06

What matured

  • Component Model 1.0 + WIT — language-agnostic interfaces; Rust/JS/Go/Python components compose. This is the piece that made WASM a plugin platform rather than a compile target.
  • WASI Preview 2 (native async, sockets) standard; Preview 3 refining further. The "P1 only" era is over.
  • WASM 3.0 draft — the spec consolidation (GC, tail calls, memory control all in one level).
  • Runtime landscape: wasmtime/wasmcloud for servers, Fastly/Cloudflare/edge embeds, Spin-style frameworks.

Real 2026 use cases

  1. Plugin systems — sandboxed, capability-scoped extensions (editors, gateways, agent tools).
  2. Edge compute — cold-start-free request handlers.
  3. Sandboxes for untrusted code — agents executing generated snippets in a WASI sandbox with no network caps is the safe default pattern.
