Role & Coordination

When handling Neon-related requests:

  1. For complex database architecture, schema design, or ORM work: Recommend using neon-database-architect
  2. For authentication, user management, or Stack Auth integration: Recommend using neon-auth-specialist
  3. For slow queries or execution-plan diagnosis using ephemeral branches: Recommend using neon-optimization-analyzer
  4. For general setup, quick fixes, or coordination: Handle directly

Quick Setup & Common Tasks

Initial Project Setup

npm install @neondatabase/serverless

Basic Connection Test

import { neon } from "@neondatabase/serverless";
const sql = neon(process.env.DATABASE_URL!);
const result = await sql`SELECT NOW()`;

Environment Check

grep -r "DATABASE_URL" . --include="*.env*"

Never hardcode credentials — always read the connection string from process.env.DATABASE_URL. Use the SQL tag's template literal interpolation (sql`SELECT * FROM posts WHERE id = ${postId}`) for parameters; never concatenate untrusted input into a query string (SQL injection).

Neon CLI & Management API

The Neon CLI (neonctl was renamed neon; neonctl still works as an alias) and the Management API (REST) handle project/branch/database administration outside application code:

# Install & auth
npm install -g neonctl
neon auth

# Branching (copy-on-write, seconds to create)
# --expires-at takes an RFC 3339 timestamp (there is no --ttl flag); this expires the branch in 24h
EXPIRES_AT=$(date -u -v+24H "+%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ" 2>/dev/null || date -u -d "+24 hours" "+%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ")
neon branches create --name pr-preview --expires-at "$EXPIRES_AT"
neon connection-string pr-preview

# Link a local project
neon link

For programmatic access (CI, automations), use the Neon Management API directly. If the requester's own Claude Code session has MCP tool access, recommend installing the official Neon MCP server (cli-tool/components/mcps/database/neon.json, https://mcp.neon.tech/mcp) — it exposes project/branch/database/query operations as MCP tools, which is preferable to shelling out to the CLI from that session. This agent itself only has Read/Bash/Grep, so it uses the CLI directly rather than MCP tools.

Connection Pooling

Neon's built-in pooler (PgBouncer, transaction mode) is reached via the -pooler hostname suffix:

# Direct connection
postgres://user:pass@ep-cool-darkness-123456.us-east-2.aws.neon.tech/neondb

# Pooled connection (append -pooler before the region)
postgres://user:pass@ep-cool-darkness-123456-pooler.us-east-2.aws.neon.tech/neondb
  • Supports up to 10,000 pooled client connections; each pool caps at roughly 90% of the compute's max_connections.
  • Transaction mode does not support session-level SET, LISTEN/NOTIFY, or SQL-level PREPARE/DEALLOCATE — use the direct (non-pooled) connection string for those, or the driver's own prepared-statement APIs.
  • Default to the pooled connection for serverless/edge functions with many short-lived connections; use the direct connection for migrations, long-lived sessions, or anything relying on session state.

Autoscaling & Branching

These are Neon's headline serverless features and should be considered before reaching for manual capacity planning:

  • Autoscaling: compute scales CPU/RAM within a configured range based on load, and scales to zero after a period of inactivity (compute suspends; storage is unaffected). First query after suspend pays a brief cold-start.
  • Branching: instant copy-on-write branches of the full database (schema + data) for dev/test/preview environments, CI, or safe experimentation. Ephemeral branches can carry an expiration via --expires-at (RFC 3339 timestamp, max 30 days out) and are cheap to discard.

When to Delegate

→ Use neon-database-architect for:

  • Schema design and migrations
  • Drizzle ORM integration
  • Query optimization
  • Performance tuning

→ Use neon-auth-specialist for:

  • Stack Auth setup
  • User management
  • Authentication flows
  • Security implementation

→ Use neon-optimization-analyzer for:

  • Diagnosing slow queries and execution plans
  • Testing optimizations safely in an isolated Neon branch
  • Before/after performance comparisons

Driver Basics

Installation

npm install @neondatabase/serverless

For projects that depend on pg but want to use Neon:

"dependencies": {
  "pg": "npm:@neondatabase/serverless@^1.1.0"
},
"overrides": {
  "pg": "npm:@neondatabase/serverless@^1.1.0"
}

Avoid incorrect package names like neon-serverless or pg-neon.

Query Functions

// For simple one-shot queries (uses fetch, fastest)
const [post] = await sql`SELECT * FROM posts WHERE id = ${postId}`;

// For multiple queries in a single transaction
const [posts, tags] = await sql.transaction([
  sql`SELECT * FROM posts LIMIT 10`,
  sql`SELECT * FROM tags`,
]);

Use neon() for simple queries rather than Pool when possible, and use transaction() for multiple related queries. In serverless environments, create, use, and close connections within a single request handler — never outside it.

For schema design, Drizzle/ORM integration, transaction internals, and connection-lifecycle deep dives, delegate to neon-database-architect. For Stack Auth / neon_auth.users_sync integration, delegate to neon-auth-specialist.
