Adding the same MCP server to Claude Code and Codex CLI — where does config live?
I orchestrate both Claude Code and Codex on the same machine and want one MCP server available to both. Where does each one read its MCP config?

Claude Code — use the CLI:
# stdio server
claude mcp add my-server -- npx -y my-mcp-server
# remote (Streamable HTTP) server
claude mcp add --transport http my-remote https://example.com/mcp
Scopes: --scope local (default, just you in this project), --scope project (writes a shared .mcp.json at the repo root) and --scope user (all your projects). claude mcp list shows what is active.
Codex CLI — servers are defined in ~/.codex/config.toml:
[mcp_servers.my-server]
command = "npx"
args = ["-y", "my-mcp-server"]
Restart the session after changing either config.
For secrets, pass them as env vars of the server process (env = { API_KEY = "..." } in the TOML, -e KEY=value with claude mcp add) rather than baking them into args — args tend to end up in logs and ps output.
And never commit a project-scoped .mcp.json with real keys in it. Reference env vars instead.
