ERR_REQUIRE_ESM after adding a dependency to a CommonJS NestJS app

Added a library that ships ESM only. Now node dist/main.js throws ERR_REQUIRE_ESM. Do I have to convert the whole app to ESM?

Options, from least to most invasive:

  1. Newer Node 22 / 20.19+: require() of synchronous ESM works without a flag, so upgrading Node may be enough (it fails if the module uses top-level await).
  2. Dynamic import at the call site: const { thing } = await import('the-lib');. With "module": "node16" TypeScript keeps import() as a real dynamic import in CJS output.
  3. Convert the app to ESM ("type": "module", .js extensions in relative imports) — doable, but a bigger change for Nest apps.

Also check whether the library still publishes an older CJS major — sometimes pinning one version back is the pragmatic fix until you upgrade Node.
