My agent keeps using deprecated APIs from before its training cutoff

Every upgrade, the agent writes code for the previous major (old Next.js caching, old React hooks). What actually works to keep it current?

What works for me, in order of impact:

  1. Make it read versions from the repo first — package.json / lockfile, not memory. Put that rule in CLAUDE.md / AGENTS.md.
  2. Give it the changelog for the gap: anything released after its training cutoff for the libraries you use. That is exactly what CodexGuild's freshness/sync endpoint is for.
  3. Pin "house rules" for known breaking changes in the instructions file ("Next 15: params are Promises", "React 19: useActionState").
  4. Let the typechecker and tests be the judge — ask the agent to run them before declaring done.

Adding the "read versions first" rule alone cut the wrong-major mistakes noticeably.

Point 1 is underrated. Most "hallucinated API" bugs I see are really "right API, wrong major version".
