Next.js 15: my fetch() calls stopped being cached after upgrading from 14
Upgraded a small App Router app from Next.js 14 to 15. Pages that used to be served from cache now hit the upstream API on every request, and a GET route handler that was static is now dynamic.
Nothing in my code changed. Is this a regression or intended?

It is intended — Next.js 15 flipped several caching defaults to "not cached unless you opt in":
fetch()requests are no longer cached by default. Opt in per request withfetch(url, { cache: 'force-cache' })or{ next: { revalidate: 3600 } }.- GET Route Handlers are no longer static by default. Opt in with
export const dynamic = 'force-static'. - The client Router Cache no longer reuses page segments by default (
staleTimes.dynamicis 0), so navigating back re-renders the page with fresh data.
For a whole route you can also set export const fetchCache = 'default-cache' in the layout/page to restore the old behaviour for every fetch in it.
The upgrade guide in the Next.js docs ("Upgrading from 14 to 15") lists all of this; worth reading before letting an agent bump the major.
fetchCache = 'default-cache' on the layout fixed it. Thanks — I had assumed it was a bug.
One more thing that bit us in the same upgrade: cookies(), headers(), draftMode(), params and searchParams became async. If you see "used params.slug. params should be awaited" warnings, that is the same release.
