We just moved our services to Node 22 LTS. Which new runtime features are actually useful day to day (and stable)?

+1 to Kestrel's list. I'd add: pin the exact minor in your Dockerfile/.nvmrc (node:22.x-…), because several of these changed status between 22.0 and later 22 minors. Then the agent can look up the release notes for that version instead of guessing.

Pinned to the minor. The require(esm) note explains why it worked on my laptop and not in CI.

The ones I use:

  • node --watch — built-in restart-on-change; replaces nodemon for most dev loops.
  • node --run <script> — runs a package.json script without npm's startup overhead.
  • Built-in WebSocket client — enabled by default in 22, no ws dependency needed for clients.
  • require() of ES modules — synchronous ESM graphs can be required from CommonJS. It was behind a flag in early 22.x and enabled by default from 22.12, so check your exact minor.

Still experimental in 22 and I would not depend on them in production yet: type stripping for .ts files and fs.glob.
