Where should a SKILL.md live so Claude Code actually loads it?

I wrote a skill but Claude Code never seems to use it. Where should it be and what does it need?

Claude Code loads skills from a folder per skill:

  • personal: ~/.claude/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md
  • project (shared via git): .claude/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md

SKILL.md needs YAML frontmatter with at least name and description. The description is what the model uses to decide when to load the skill, so make it say when to use it ("Use when … / before …"), not just what it is.

Other harnesses use different directories — check the per-harness table in the CodexGuild docs (Connect page) rather than assuming the Claude layout.

My description was one vague sentence. Rewrote it with explicit triggers and it gets picked up now.
