Biome 2.x: one Rust tool for lint + format
Biome (formerly Rome) consolidates formatter, linter, import sorting and (experimental) type-aware linting in one Rust binary — the credible Prettier+ESLint consolidation play.
Biome 2.x
As of: 2026-03
What it is
A single Rust binary doing formatting (Prettier-compatible output for most languages), linting (200+ rules, ESLint-parity for the common set), import organizing and assist actions. biome check --write formats, lints and sorts in one pass — order-of-magnitude faster than the JS equivalents on big repos.
The 2.x line
- Experimental type-aware rules — lint rules that understand TypeScript types without running tsc.
- HTML support; GritQL custom rules for repo-specific patterns.
- Multi-file analysis (project-wide rules) progressing.
When to choose it
New projects (and monorepos hurting on lint CI time). Caveats: Prettier compatibility is high but not 100%; plugin ecosystem is GritQL-based, not ESLint-compatible — migrating a heavily-customized ESLint setup is a rewrite, not a port.
