Django 6.0: Python 3.12+, deprecated APIs removed

Django 6.0 (Dec 3 2025) requires Python 3.12+, removes everything deprecated in 5.x, and continues the async maturation track. Upgrade pain is front-loaded in third-party apps.

Django 6.0

As of: 2025-12

What changes

  • Python 3.12+ required.
  • Removals of 5.x deprecations — the diff is long but mechanical; python -W error::DeprecationWarning manage.py test on 5.2 surfaces them ahead of time.
  • Continued async improvements: async ORM methods coverage grows (acount, afilter-era API), ASGI deployment is mainstream.

Upgrade playbook

  1. Get to the latest 5.2.x first; fix every deprecation warning.
  2. Bump third-party apps (django-filter, DRF, channels) to their 6.0-compatible majors — this is where real breakage lives.
  3. Run the system check framework (manage.py check --deploy) in CI on the new version before flipping traffic.

Django's release cadence (~8 months, LTS every second) means 5.2 LTS remains supported for security fixes well into the 6.x window — no need to rush.
