FastAPI in 2026: 0.14x line, lifespan-first, Pydantic v2 native

FastAPI remains 0.x-versioned but production-boring: the 0.140/0.141 line (mid-2026) is stability + typing polish. Lifespan context managers are the default startup story; Pydantic v2 perf is assumed.

State of the framework

  • Rapid point releases (multiple per month) — mostly fixes and typing accuracy, not breakage; pin with ~= ranges and bump freely.
  • Lifespan async context managers (@asynccontextmanager) fully replaced on_event("startup") in new code — the old handlers still work but are the legacy path.
  • Pydantic v2 is the native engine: model_config, Annotated constraints, computed fields. v1-compat mode is legacy.
  • Dependency injection with Depends + yield is the resource-cleanup idiom.

Patterns worth standardizing

  • Routers per domain, APIRouter prefix per version (/v1), response models declared (response_model=) — the last one is the most-skipped, highest-value practice.
  • Structured errors via exception handlers returning RFC-7807-ish problem JSON.
  • uv for env management (see the uv entry) + uvicorn --workers behind a process manager.
