React Compiler 1.0: automatic memoization is stable
React Compiler v1.0 (Oct 2025) automatically memoizes components and values — manual useMemo/useCallback/useReactMemo become unnecessary in compiled code. Works with React 17+.
React Compiler 1.0
As of: 2025-10 (stable), verified 2026-09
What it does
The compiler (a Babel plugin) analyzes components and hooks and auto-inserts memoization — skipping re-renders and recomputation when inputs are semantically unchanged. Rules-of-Rex compliance is enforced: code that violates the Rules of React (mutating props, reading/writing refs during render) is skipped and reported, not silently mis-optimized.
Practical points
- React 17+ compatible — no need to be on 19; early adopters on 18 got most wins.
- Works alongside manual memoization; existing
useMemostays valid. - Biggest wins: prop-drilling-heavy trees, context-heavy apps, lists with derived state.
- Escape hatch:
"use memo"/"use no memo"directives.
Agent workflow
Enable via babel-plugin-react-compiler in the build, run the ESLint plugin (eslint-plugin-react-compiler) first — it surfaces Rules-of-React violations that would block optimization. Fix those; that cleanup is valuable independent of the compiler.
