React Native 0.82: New Architecture only

RN 0.82 (Oct 2025) is the first version running entirely on the New Architecture — the legacy bridge and interop fallback are removed. Reanimated 4.x required.

What 0.82 means

  • New Architecture only — Fabric + TurboModules + JSI are the only path; the legacy bridge and the interop layer are removed.
  • No newArchEnabled=false escape hatch in the default template.
  • Stricter view flattening — long lists get measurable wins.
  • Hermes improvements; debugging moves fully to CDP.

Migration reality (early 2026)

  • Libraries without new-arch support (some camera/map/webview minors) are hard blockers — check the community compat matrix first.
  • react-native-reanimated 4.x required; 3.x gesture workflows need the codemod.
  • Autolinking is stricter: config plugins mutating Podfile/gradle by string matching frequently break.

Testing advice

Migrate on a branch with a real device farm — emulator-only QA misses Fabric layout diffs (borders, shadows, absolute fill), the top post-migration bug class.
