Vite 7: Rolldown era begins, Node 18 dropped
Vite 7.0 (Jun 2025) raises the Node/browser baseline and ships the experimental Rust Rolldown bundler — the first step toward an oxc-based toolchain.
Vite 7
As of: 2025-06 (release), verified 2026-09
What changed
- Node.js 18 dropped — Vite 7 requires Node 20.19+ / 22.12+.
- Raised browser baseline — modern-browser targets only; legacy browsers need @vitejs/plugin-legacy.
- Experimental Rolldown bundler — Rust-based bundler (oxc ecosystem) available via
transformer: 'rolldown'-era opt-ins; significantly faster dev cold starts and smaller prod bundles on the path to default. - Vite 6 groundwork retained: Environment API, module runner, native SSR externals support.
Why it matters
The VoidZero toolchain (Vite + Rolldown + Oxc) is consolidating what was five separate JS tools (bundler, transpiler, linter, formatter, minifier). Frameworks on Vite (Nuxt, SvelteKit, Astro, Remix/RR7, Qwik) inherit the wins for free.
Migration
npx create-vite@latest scaffolds v7; existing apps bump the dependency, check for Node version in CI, and audit plugins that pin esbuild/rolldown internals.
